Chalk Paint® *New* Matte and Gloss Lacquers

$51.00

Chalk Paint® Lacquers are clear varnishes intended for heavily-used surfaces, both interior and exterior, such as floors and cabinets. They contain UV and water protection! To be applied with a smooth brush or roller over Chalk Paint® for a matte or gloss durable finish. If working with an exceptionally dark color, such as Athenian Black, Graphite, Amsterdam Green, Oxford Navy, etc. we do not recommend Matte Lacquer directly over those colors due to the tendency for all matte topcoats to look cloudy/ streaky directly over dark colors (due to the flattening agents in such products having a tendency to pool in the microscopic pores). With dark colors we suggest either only using Gloss Lacquer OR applying 1-2 coats of Gloss Lacquer first, following by a finishing coat of Matte Lacquer to ‘knock the gloss back’ and make it look less shiny, for aesthetic preferences.

To apply, make sure your paint has thoroughly dried (often we like to wait overnight). Stir Lacquers up from the bottom well, as the solids can settle and become thick at the bottom. Then first coat of Lacquer should be thinned a bit with up to 10% water to ensure quick and even application. You can apply your second coat of Lacquer within 2 hours of the first coat drying, and apply this coat full-strength. Rolling and brushing it on both look great!

As with all varnishes, please make sure you are not back-brushing the product because that will create uneven flashing/ sheen levels. Always use confident brush or roller strokes. If working on a large project that calls for many cans of Lacquer, make sure they are either from the same batch number OR batch/mix them together to precaution that they will end up creating the same finish. Not to be used over other finishes like waxes, polys, etc, and interior use only. Test on white colors as such colors can be vulnerable to yellowing/ warming.

We highly encourage that on wood substrate surfaces that the very first coat should always be a clear shellac to seal in any stains from wood underneath. Without this, any varnish (not just Annie Sloan's Lacquer) can reach through and under to pull up stains or tannins from the wood. If in doubt, always test your surface before applying all over!
